Chapter 17

The training grounds are beautiful. When the cab drops me off in the parking lot, I’m surrounded by all kinds of expensive cars. They’re lined up like a display of wealth, and I know they all belong to the players.

The idea that they’re driving these crazy expensive cars to something as simple as a training session is bizarre. But they wouldn’t have more than one…would they?

I walk past the cars and through a large building with change rooms, a fully kitted gym, a cafeteria, and finally, a door that leads onto the lush green fields, perfectly sprayed with white lines and manicured to stay picture ready.

The Hawaiian Rainbow Warriors are running drills on the far side of the field.

I don’t walk all the way there to watch. Instead, I sit down on one of the concrete benches in the shade nearby and keep an eye on them from afar.

They’re not wearing their equipment today. The guys seem to be working on fitness, and they’re wearing loose shorts, with only a few of them wearing t-shirts.

I can’t tell which one is Brett from this distance—they all look the same with their stacked muscles and sweaty bodies, agile and fit, in peak condition.

The training session doesn’t last much longer, and after the guys drink water and stand around talking for a while, they head back toward the building where I’m waiting. I pick Brett from the crowd when they come closer. It’s easier to spot him now. It doesn’t take long before his eyes fall on me, and I watch his expression as he breaks away from the group to walk to me.

He’s one of the guys not wearing a shirt, and his bare skin is slick with sweat. It only makes his muscles more pronounced, and I have to stop myself from staring…or drooling.

His face is grim, his mouth set in a thin line, and I force myself to focus on his face, his eyes.

“What are you doing here?” he asks.

“I came to see you.”

“Why?”

I frown. “Don’t you want me to be here?”

Brett shakes his head. “I don’t see why you bothered.”

I narrow my eyes at him. “What’s that supposed to mean? I thought—”

“You thought you were just going to do whatever the fuck you want, with whoever the fuck you want, and come back to me when you feel like it?”

His hostility takes me aback.

“Wow,” I say. “You’re a dick.”

He laughs bitterly. “Sure, but that’s what you all think of men, right? We don’t have feelings; we’re just here for your pleasure.”

I shake my head. “Do you hear yourself right now? Men sleep around all the time with no regard for women’s feelings, and from what I’ve heard, you’re the leader of the pack. And now you have the audacity to challenge me on what I’m doing?”

Brett only clenches his jaw. It takes me a moment to figure out what the hell is going on, but I think I can piece it together. He saw me with Charlie in the lobby two days ago, didn’t he?

“Are you upset about Charlie?” I ask.
